About Me
Victoria Winata is an Indonesian, Naarm-based writer, poet, artist, student, and theatremaker. She was born in Semarang, Central Java, where she lived until she moved to Bali at eight years old. After five years, Victoria moved with her family to Melbourne when she was 13 years old. Her experience of moving frequently to new and diverse places has deeply influenced her art today.
In her writing and art Victoria is interested in issues surrounding multiculturalism, ethnic identitiy, national identity, migration, among many others. Her work is contemplative, personal, and self-reflective as she often draws from her background as an Indonesian of Chinese descent who migrated to Australia as a young teenager. She writes in both Indonesian and English: her bilingualism is integral to her identity, and she strives to promote awareness about her birth country and its national language wherever she can.
She is passionate about cross-cultural communication as a rich exchange of knowledge, stories, and experiences. So far, her theatrical works have been staged at Guild Theatre, La Mama, and the Motley Bauhaus.
Her writing has been published in Cordite, Voiceworks, Farrago Magazine, Screen Queens, and the Suburban Review.
